2013 International Engine of the Year Awards
The results are in for the 2013 edition of the coveted International Engine of the Year Awards. We know what you're waiting for so let the drumbeat roll…and the big winner of the International Engine of the Year Award goes too…Ford and its frugal 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline unit for the second year in a row.
Besides the overall champion, there are eleven more categories, in which we see some changes over the previous year's awards, but before we go there, let's see which segment winners remained the same in 2013.
These include the following engines: Ford's 1.0L turbo unit in the sub 1.0-liter category; VW Group's 1.4-liter TSI gasoline in the 1.0- to 1.4-liter segment; the BMW and PSA Group's 1.6-liter turbo petrol in the 1.4L to 1.8L category; BMW's 2.0L Turbo petrol in the 1.8L to 2.0L section and finally Audi's 2.5-liter turbo'd inline-five, which once again, took first place in the 2.0L to 2.5L class.
The new entries for 2013 include Fiat's 0.8-liter two-cylinder turbocharged CNG unit that won the Green Engine of the Year Award. GM's 1.4-liter range extender plummeted from first to 6th place this year.
Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12 engine in the F12berlinetta was voted the Best Performance Engine as well as best powerplant over 4.0-liters (last year's winner was the Ferrari 458's V8 unit).
BMW lost the 2.5-liter to 3.0-liter class to the Porsche Cayman and Boxster's 2.7-liter flat six, as well as the 3.0-liter to 4.0-liter category to the McLaren MP4's 3.8-liter V8.
